Mounjaro Diet Plan: What to Eat on Mounjaro, the Indian Way (Veg and Non-Veg)
On Mounjaro, eat protein first at every meal (paneer, dal, curd, eggs, soya, chicken), keep rice and roti portions small, drink 2–3 litres of water, and eat light on injection day. Below is a full sample day, vegetarian and non-vegetarian, built from ordinary Indian food.

Clinical Editorial

The Mounjaro diet in one line: protein first, small carb portions, plenty of water, and lighter meals around your injection. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) cuts appetite strongly, so you will eat noticeably less. The job of your diet is to make those smaller meals carry enough protein and fibre to protect muscle, keep you regular and keep nausea down.
You do not need special food, imported powders or a keto plan. Dal, paneer, curd, eggs, soya, chana and chicken do the heavy lifting. If you have already read our semaglutide diet guide, the principles carry over; this page adds what is specific to tirzepatide and gives you a full sample day.
Key takeaways
- Aim for roughly 1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kg of your target weight each day, spread over 4 to 5 small meals.
- Keep rice and roti, just smaller: about half a katori of rice or 1 to 2 phulkas per meal, with dal and sabzi taking most of the plate.
- Eat light and simple on injection day and for 2 to 3 days after each dose increase, when nausea is most likely.
- Go easy on fried food, large rice portions, sweets and alcohol. They are the usual triggers for nausea, reflux and stalled progress.
- Drink 2–3 litres of fluid a day unless your doctor has told you to limit fluids.
Why diet matters more on Mounjaro, not less
Tirzepatide acts on two gut hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. It slows how fast your stomach empties and turns down hunger signals in the brain. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, average weight loss over 72 weeks was 15.0% at 5 mg and 20.9% at 15 mg, versus 3.1% on placebo, and every group, placebo included, followed a reduced-calorie diet with activity advice. Results vary from person to person.
When you eat half of what you used to, protein is the first thing to fall short. Low protein plus fast weight loss means some of what you lose is muscle, which is why our muscle loss guide pairs protein with simple strength work. The appetite drop is also strongest in the weeks after each dose step (2.5 mg to 5 mg, then 7.5 mg), so your eating needs to flex with the dose.
Protein first: the Indian sources that work
If your target weight is 65 kg, that is roughly 80 to 105 g of protein a day. It sounds like a lot on a small appetite, which is why you eat the protein part of each plate first, before the rice or roti. Approximate protein per serving:
- Paneer, 100 g: about 18 g. Tofu is similar with less fat.
- Soya chunks, 30 g dry: about 15 g. One of the cheapest proteins in India.
- Hung curd or Greek yoghurt, 1 katori: about 10 g. Regular dahi about 6 to 8 g.
- Dal, rajma or chole, 1 katori cooked: about 7 to 9 g. Moong and masoor are gentlest on the stomach.
- Eggs, 2 whole: about 12 g.
- Chicken or fish, 100 g cooked: about 25 to 30 g.
- Roasted chana or sprouts, 1 katori: about 7 to 10 g.

| Dinner (by 8 pm) | 100 g paneer or tofu bhurji with sautéed vegetables, 1 phulka (about 20 g) | 100 g grilled fish or chicken tikka, salad, a small bowl of dal (about 28 to 30 g) |
| Approximate total | 75 to 90 g protein | 90 to 100 g protein |
Two things make this chart work. First, small and frequent beats big and rare: five small meals are easier to finish than three large ones when your stomach empties slowly. Second, stop at the first sign of fullness. On Mounjaro, the gap between comfortable and uncomfortable is small, and eating past it is the most common cause of nausea and burping.

How to eat on injection day and after a dose increase
Mounjaro can be injected at any time of day, with or without food, on the same day each week. What changes is how you eat around it. Many people feel fuller and slightly queasy for a day or two after the injection, and more so in the first week at a new dose.
- Keep the injection-day dinner light. Moong dal khichdi, curd rice with a small portion of rice, idli with sambar, or a vegetable soup with paneer cubes. Avoid scheduling the injection before a wedding, party or heavy restaurant meal.
- Eat smaller portions more often for 2 to 3 days after a dose step, even if you are not hungry. Skipping meals entirely can make nausea and weakness worse.
- Choose bland and cool when queasy: curd, chaas, coconut water, plain khichdi, toast, bananas. Ginger or jeera water helps some people.
- Do not lie down right after eating. Leave 2 to 3 hours between dinner and bed to reduce reflux.
If nausea, constipation or acidity are bothering you, our side-effect food guide covers specific fixes. Persistent vomiting, severe stomach pain or being unable to keep fluids down is a reason to call your doctor the same day, not to push through.
What to go easy on
Nothing is permanently banned. These are the foods that most often cause trouble on tirzepatide, so keep them small and occasional, especially in the first months:
- Fried and very oily food: samosa, pakora, puri, bhature, heavy gravies. Fat sits longest in a slowed stomach and is the classic trigger for nausea and burping.
- Large rice portions: a full plate of rice crowds out protein and can leave you uncomfortably full. Half a katori, or swap some for millets or extra dal.
- Sweets and sugary drinks: mithai, packaged juices, sweetened chai several times a day. They add calories without keeping you full.
- Alcohol: it adds empty calories, can worsen nausea and reflux, and if you take diabetes medicines it raises the risk of low blood sugar. Many people find their tolerance drops on Mounjaro. If you drink, keep it small and never on an empty stomach.
- Very spicy food in the early weeks: fine later for most people, but it can aggravate acidity at the start.
Hydration: the part everyone forgets
When appetite drops, thirst often drops with it, and a lot of your daily water normally comes from food. Low fluid intake makes constipation, headaches, tiredness and dizziness worse, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly.
- Aim for about 2–3 litres of fluid a day, unless your doctor has asked you to restrict fluids for a heart or kidney condition.
- Sip steadily through the day rather than drinking a lot with meals, which fills the stomach and can bring on nausea.
- Chaas, nimbu pani without sugar, coconut water, clear soups and dal all count.
- Pale yellow urine is a simple check that you are drinking enough.
The simplest version of this whole page
Protein on the plate first, then sabzi, then a small portion of rice or roti. Stop when you feel full. Water through the day. Light dinner on injection day. Walk after meals. That covers most of what matters.
Where the nutritionist fits in
A sample chart gets you started; it cannot account for your thyroid reports, your working hours, whether you eat onion and garlic, or the fact that your family eats dinner at 10 pm. That is why ALTRcare includes a nutritionist and a personalised Indian diet plan in every tirzepatide plan. The tirzepatide 3-month plan is ₹34,999 (₹11,666 a month) and covers all three doses (2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg), three doctor consultations timed to each dose step, the diet plan, WhatsApp support and cold-chain delivery, GST included. Premium Care (₹47,999 for 3 months) updates the diet plan every month.
The price is on the page before you speak to anyone, and the free online doctor consultation is a 15–20 minute video call with a senior specialist. If the doctor says tirzepatide is not right for you, you are told plainly and nobody calls you again.

Frequently asked questions
What should I eat on Mounjaro as an Indian vegetarian?
Build every meal around protein: paneer, tofu, soya chunks, hung curd, dal, chana and sprouts, with sabzi and a small portion of rice or roti. Most vegetarians need 4 to 5 small protein servings a day to reach 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of target weight.
Can I eat rice and roti on Mounjaro?
Yes. Keep portions small, around half a katori of rice or 1 to 2 phulkas per meal, and eat the dal, sabzi or protein first. Millets and whole-wheat roti keep you fuller for longer.
What foods should I avoid on Mounjaro?
Nothing is strictly banned, but go easy on fried and very oily food, large rice portions, sweets, sugary drinks and alcohol. These are the most common triggers for nausea, reflux and slower progress.
Should I eat differently on my Mounjaro injection day?
Keep that day's meals, especially dinner, light and simple: khichdi, curd rice, idli or soup with paneer. Eat small portions for 2 to 3 days after each dose increase, when nausea is most likely.
Can I drink alcohol on Mounjaro?
Small amounts are not forbidden, but alcohol adds calories, can worsen nausea and acidity, and raises the risk of low blood sugar if you take diabetes medicines. Ask your doctor what is sensible for you.
Does ALTRcare give a diet plan with Mounjaro?
Yes. Every ALTRcare tirzepatide plan includes a nutritionist and a personalised Indian diet plan. Premium Care updates the plan every month.
