BMI calculator for Indians

Western charts say overweight starts at 25. For Indian adults it starts at 23, because we carry more fat at the same weight and develop diabetes earlier. This calculator uses the Indian cutoffs and lets you add waist size, which predicts risk better than BMI alone.

Your BMI places you in the obese category. Medical weight loss is built for exactly this.

How to read your result

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The Indian Council of Medical Research and the Indian consensus guidelines set the healthy range for Indian adults at 18.5 to 22.9, overweight at 23 to 26.9, and obese at 27 and above. The reason the cutoffs are lower than the WHO's 25 and 30 is that Indians carry more body fat, and more of it around the abdomen, at any given BMI. That is why type 2 diabetes appears in Indians at a lower weight and a younger age.

Waist is the second signal. A waist of 90 cm or more in men, or 80 cm or more in women, measured at the navel, is the Indian cutoff for abdominal obesity. Someone with a BMI of 24 and a waist of 96 cm carries more metabolic risk than the BMI alone suggests, and a doctor treats them accordingly.

Neither number is a diagnosis. In an ALTRcare consultation the doctor looks at BMI, waist, your history and, where needed, blood reports before deciding whether medication is right for you.
