Vegetarian Protein on GLP-1: How to Hit 100g a Day the Indian Way

GLP-1 medicines shrink your appetite; they do not choose what fills the smaller space. For India's vegetarians, that creates a real muscle-loss risk unless protein is engineered into every meal. Here is the practical playbook with dal, paneer, soya and curd.

Indian vegetarian protein sources: dal, paneer, soya chunks, curd and sprouts

Here is the trap in one sentence: a GLP-1 medicine cuts how much you eat by a third or more, and the traditional Indian vegetarian plate is roughly 60 to 70% carbohydrate, so unless you deliberately rebuild the plate, the thing you cut is mostly the small protein share you had. The result is weight loss with too much muscle in it: a lighter, weaker, softer body and a slower metabolism that invites regain. The fix is not eating more. It is making protein the first thing on the plate, every single meal.

Your number

Aim for 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of your target body weight daily. Target weight 65 kg: roughly 80 to 105g of protein a day. On an appetite-suppressed stomach, that is genuinely hard from three meals, which is why the playbook below spreads it across four to five small hits.

The real maths of Indian vegetarian foods

  • Paneer, 100g: about 18g protein. The vegetarian MVP; grill or bhurji it rather than drowning it in gravy.
  • Soya chunks, 50g dry: about 26g protein. The single most protein-dense item in the Indian kitchen, at the lowest cost per gram.
  • Dal, one katori cooked: about 7 to 9g. Beloved, but you would need 10+ katoris for a day's protein. Dal is a contributor, not a foundation.
  • Greek curd or hung curd, 150g: about 15g. Regular dahi is roughly a third of that; strain it or buy Greek.
  • Eggs (if eggitarian), 2 whole: about 12g.
  • Whey protein, 1 scoop: 24 to 27g. On GLP-1 appetite, this is less a supplement and more a tool; one scoop replaces a volume of food your stomach no longer wants.
  • Sprouts, one katori: about 7g. Rajma/chole, one katori: about 7 to 9g. Peanuts, tofu, besan all add meaningful grams.

A sample 100g day that fits a shrunken appetite

  1. 1Breakfast: besan chilla with paneer stuffing, plus a small bowl of curd. ~25g.
  2. 2Mid-morning: whey shake in water or milk. ~25g.
  3. 3Lunch: soya chunk curry (40g dry soya) with one roti and salad. ~24g.
  4. 4Evening: roasted chana or a handful of peanuts with chai. ~8g.
  5. 5Dinner: dal, a small katori, plus 100g grilled paneer and vegetables. ~25g.

Protein first, literally

Eat the protein portion of each meal before the roti and rice. GLP-1 fullness arrives fast; whatever you eat first is what actually gets eaten. This one habit rescues more vegetarian GLP-1 diets than any supplement.

Pair it with resistance training

Protein is the raw material; training is the instruction to keep the muscle. Two to three short resistance sessions a week (bodyweight, bands or weights) signal your body to burn fat rather than muscle during the deficit. Walking is wonderful but does not send that signal. Together, adequate protein and resistance work are the difference between ending treatment lean versus ending it simply smaller.

Frequently asked questions

How much protein do I need on semaglutide as a vegetarian?

Aim for 1.2 to 1.6g per kg of your target body weight daily, typically 80 to 110g for most adults. Spread it across 4 to 5 small protein hits since GLP-1 appetite makes large meals difficult.

What is the best vegetarian protein source in India?

Per rupee and per gram, soya chunks (about 52g protein per 100g dry) lead, followed by paneer, Greek curd, tofu and whey protein. Dal contributes but cannot carry a full day's target alone.

Do I need whey protein on GLP-1?

It is not mandatory, but with a suppressed appetite one scoop delivers 24 to 27g of protein in a glass, which is often the practical difference between hitting and missing your daily number as a vegetarian.

Will I lose muscle on semaglutide?

Some lean mass loss happens with any large weight loss, but it is minimised by adequate protein and 2 to 3 resistance training sessions weekly. Untracked vegetarian diets on GLP-1 are at particular risk, which is why deliberate protein planning matters.
