GLP-1 Drugs Out-Earned the AI Labs in 2025. Here's What That Tells Us.

Everyone talked about AI. But one class of weight-loss drug quietly made more money than the frontier AI companies.

If you read the news in 2025, you'd think artificial intelligence was the only story in the global economy. But quietly, a different industry was making more money โ€” and it was about weight, not chatbots.

The numbers

~$36.5B
Eli Lilly tirzepatide (Mounjaro + Zepbound) in 2025
~$30B+
Novo Nordisk semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus)
~$9B
Anthropic annualised run-rate exiting 2025

In 2025, Eli Lilly's tirzepatide alone โ€” Mounjaro and Zepbound โ€” booked roughly $36.5 billion, more than half of the entire company's revenue. Add Novo Nordisk's semaglutide franchise, worth around $30 billion-plus, and two drugmakers selling one class of molecule pulled in something close to $70 billion.

Now the AI side. The two leading frontier-AI companies were nowhere near that on actual revenue: OpenAI booked in the low-to-mid teens of billions of dollars across 2025, and Anthropic exited the year at roughly a $9 billion annualised run-rate โ€” meaning far less actually banked. Even added together and counted generously, the marquee AI labs trailed GLP-1 drugs by a wide margin.

The fair-fight caveat

"AI" as a whole โ€” chipmakers like Nvidia, the cloud giants โ€” is a vastly bigger economy than any single drug class. The honest comparison isn't "AI" versus medicine; it's the AI labs everyone's excited about versus this one family of drugs. On that comparison, the drugs won 2025 outright.

What it actually tells us

Two things. First, this isn't a hype cycle โ€” you don't generate that kind of revenue from a fad. It reflects the largest shift in metabolic medicine in a generation, backed by demand from hundreds of millions of people. Second, the money is following a genuine unmet need: obesity and metabolic disease at population scale.

And India is now a front line

This isn't a distant Western story. By October 2025, Mounjaro had become India's single top-selling drug by value, and both global makers cut prices to compete for the Indian market. The molecule is here, it's increasingly affordable, and demand is enormous. The real question for an Indian patient isn't whether these drugs work โ€” the market has answered that โ€” but how to access them safely and at a sane price, especially given how Indian bodies store fat.

Frequently asked questions

Did GLP-1 drugs really make more money than AI companies in 2025?

On booked revenue, the two leading GLP-1 makers earned far more than the leading frontier-AI labs. The broader AI economy (chips, cloud) is larger, but the marquee AI companies trailed GLP-1 drugs.

How big is the GLP-1 market?

In 2025, GLP-1 revenue from Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk combined approached roughly $70 billion, and analysts project the obesity-drug market to keep growing strongly through the decade.

Is the GLP-1 boom reaching India?

Yes. By late 2025 Mounjaro had become India's top-selling drug by value, prices have fallen, and generic semaglutide has launched โ€” making treatment far more accessible than before.
