Wegovy and India's generic semaglutides contain the same active molecule at the same weekly doses. The difference is the bill: after Novo Nordisk's April 2026 price cut, Wegovy runs ₹5,660 a month at the 0.25 mg starter dose to about ₹16,400 at the full 2.4 mg maintenance dose, while DCGI-approved generics start at ₹1,290 a month in vials and ₹1,800 in a pen. Over a typical 9 to 12 month course, that gap is ₹60,000 to ₹1,20,000. Whether the brand justifies it depends on three specific things covered below.

Alkem's SIZE-DM trial randomized 320 patients between its semaglutide and the Novo Nordisk original for 24 weeks and demonstrated non-inferiority, with both arms reducing HbA1c by a mean of 2.20 percent. When Wegovy is worth choosing

Choose Wegovy if your doctor specifically wants the 2.4 mg STEP-trial dose replicated exactly with the original product; if you have already done well on Wegovy or Ozempic and see no reason to switch a working therapy; or if budget is genuinely not a constraint and you value the longest possible manufacturer track record. Semaglutide works while you take it and needs months of consistent use plus real lifestyle change to deliver.
