Every Semaglutide Brand in India: Which Ones Are the Same Medicine?
There are now more than forty brand names for one molecule in India. Most patients have no way of telling that Semaglyn and Semanext are the same product, or that Obeda and Usema come out of the same plant. This is the map.

Before 20 March 2026, semaglutide in India meant three names: Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus. Novo Nordisk's core Indian patent expired that Friday, and within a week Dr Reddy's, Sun Pharma, Zydus, Lupin, Alkem, Natco, Glenmark and Mankind had all launched. Since then the count has passed forty brand names.
They are almost all the same molecule. Semaglutide is semaglutide. What differs between brands is who made it, what device it comes in, what indication it was approved for, and what it costs — and those differences matter far less than the price gap between them suggests.
The genuinely confusing part is that a single product often carries two or three names, because Indian pharma multiplies brands deliberately. This page maps which names are the same thing.

The three reasons one drug has forty names
If you understand these three patterns, the entire brand list stops being confusing.
1. One company, several brands, different indications
Sun Pharma sells the same semaglutide as Noveltreat for chronic weight management and Sematrinity for type 2 diabetes. Alkem sells it as Semasize, Obesema and Hepaglide. This is a marketing structure: separate sales teams call on diabetologists and on obesity clinics, and each team wants its own brand. The medicine in the pen is identical.
2. Two companies co-marketing one product
Under an agreement announced in March 2026, Lupin holds semi-exclusive rights to co-market Zydus's semaglutide injection. So Zydus's Semaglyn and Lupin's Semanext and Livarise all come out of Zydus manufacturing. Similarly, Dr Reddy's Obeda is licensed to USV and sold as Usema. Two brand names, two sales forces, one factory.
3. Innovators launching their own cheaper second brands
This is the newest wrinkle. Facing generic competition, Novo Nordisk is launching second brands of its own drugs: Wegovy is being launched as Poviztra in partnership with Emcure Pharma, and Ozempic is being marketed as Extensior with Abbott India. Eli Lilly did the same with tirzepatide, giving Cipla distribution rights to sell Mounjaro as Yurpeak.
The pattern to remember
A second brand name almost never means a second medicine. In Indian pharma it usually means a second distribution channel — a different sales team reaching a different set of doctors or a deeper set of cities.

Prices in this category move fast
Novo Nordisk has cut Ozempic and Wegovy prices twice in twelve months, most recently by up to 36% and 48% on 1 April 2026. Generic pricing is still settling. Treat every figure here as a starting point for a conversation with your pharmacist, not a quote.
What actually differs between these brands
Four things genuinely vary, and only one of them is likely to affect your outcome.
- Device. Some brands ship a pre-filled disposable pen, some a reusable multi-dose pen, and a few come as vials requiring a separate syringe. Zydus uses a reusable multi-dose device; Alkem offers both. Vials are cheapest and the most error-prone. This is the difference that matters most day to day.
- Dose strengths stocked. Ozempic is available in three strengths in India (0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg). Wegovy has five, going up to the 2.4 mg weight-management maintenance dose. If you are treating obesity rather than diabetes, you need a brand that goes to 2.4 mg.
- Approved indication. A brand approved for type 2 diabetes and one approved for chronic weight management may contain identical medicine, but your prescription and your pharmacy's stock decisions follow the label.
- Distribution depth. Mankind and Alkem reach tier-2 and tier-3 pharmacies that Novo Nordisk's field force does not. In Indore or Bhopal this determines what you can actually buy, which is not a small thing.
What does not differ
The molecule. Every product above is semaglutide at the same strengths on the same weekly schedule. Indian approvals here were not granted on bioequivalence data alone: unlike the US FDA's abbreviated pathway, CDSCO cleared these under the Subsequent New Drug route, which also required completed Phase III trials in Indian patients. Dr Reddy's launched Obeda on a Phase III Indian dataset showing no anti-drug antibody signal at six months.
That is a higher evidentiary bar than most patients assume applies to a generic, and it is the reason a ₹1,800 pen and a ₹5,660 pen can reasonably be described as the same treatment.
Tirzepatide is not on this list
The single most common mix-up we see. Mounjaro and Yurpeak are tirzepatide, a different molecule with different trial data. Tirzepatide's Indian patents run into the 2030s, so no generic exists and none is coming soon. It costs several times more than generic semaglutide and, in head-to-head trial data, produces greater average weight loss.

How to use this at the pharmacy
- 1Check what molecule your prescription names, not what brand. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are the two possibilities and they are not interchangeable.
- 2If your brand is out of stock, ask what else the pharmacy has in the same molecule at the same strength. Using the table above, you can usually name two or three alternatives yourself.
- 3Confirm the device format before you pay. Switching from a pre-filled pen to a vial changes how you dose, and nobody will explain this at the counter.
- 4Check the strength ceiling. If you are heading to a 2.4 mg maintenance dose, a brand that tops out lower will strand you mid-titration.
- 5Never let a price gap alone drive the switch without telling your doctor. Not because the cheaper brand is worse, but because your dose schedule needs to carry over cleanly.

Are all semaglutide brands in India the same medicine?
All the injectable brands listed contain the same molecule, semaglutide, at the same weekly strengths. They differ in manufacturer, device format, approved indication and price. Every one cleared CDSCO's Subsequent New Drug pathway, which required Phase III trials in Indian patients rather than bioequivalence data alone.
Is Semaglyn the same as Semanext?
Yes. Semaglyn is Zydus's semaglutide injection. Under a March 2026 agreement, Lupin co-markets the same Zydus product as Semanext and Livarise. Same manufacturing, different sales teams.
Is Obeda the same as Usema?
Yes. Obeda is Dr Reddy's semaglutide, the first to receive DCGI approval for a generic version. It is also licensed to USV and sold under the brand name Usema.
What is the difference between Noveltreat and Sematrinity?
Both are Sun Pharma's semaglutide. Noveltreat is the brand approved for chronic weight management, Sematrinity for type 2 diabetes. The medicine is the same; the label and the sales channel differ.
Is generic semaglutide safe compared to Ozempic?
Indian generics in this category were approved under a stricter route than a standard generic. CDSCO required completed Phase III trials in Indian patients. That said, take any of them under medical supervision, because the risks that matter with GLP-1 medicines relate to dosing, titration and monitoring rather than to which company made the pen.
Is Mounjaro a semaglutide brand?
No. Mounjaro is tirzepatide, a different molecule. So is Yurpeak. Tirzepatide is still under patent in India, costs considerably more, and produces greater average weight loss in trial data. It cannot be substituted for semaglutide without a new prescription.
