Orforglipron (Foundayo) in India: Launch Status, Expected Price, and How the Daily Pill Compares to Mounjaro
Eli Lilly's once-daily weight-loss tablet was approved in the US in April 2026 and Lilly has said it is coming to India. Here is what the trials showed, what it will probably cost, who it suits, and why it will not replace the injections for most people.

For years the answer to "is there a weight-loss pill" was orlistat, which works a little and has side effects nobody wants to discuss. That changed in 2026. Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill went on sale in the US in January, and on 1 April the US FDA approved Eli Lilly's orforglipron under the brand name Foundayo. Orforglipron is the more interesting of the two for India, because it is a small molecule rather than a peptide: it does not need refrigeration, it can be taken any time with or without food, and it is cheaper to manufacture. Lilly has said publicly that it plans to launch it here.

Orforglipron is not yet approved by the DCGI or on sale in India as far as we can find. Anyone offering "Foundayo" for sale in India today is selling an import of uncertain provenance or something else entirely. We will update this line the day the status changes.
What orforglipron is
Orforglipron is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, the same class as semaglutide, but built as a non-peptide small molecule. Peptides like semaglutide and tirzepatide are digested if swallowed, which is why they are injected, and why Rybelsus and the Wegovy pill need a special absorption enhancer and an empty stomach. Orforglipron survives digestion on its own. That is the whole point: a tablet you take with breakfast, no fridge, no needle, no fasting rules.
What the trials showed
ATTAIN-1, the pivotal trial of about 3,000 adults with obesity, included Indian sites. At the highest dose of 36 mg, participants lost an average of 12.4% of body weight over 72 weeks. Lower doses of 6 and 12 mg produced 7.8% and 9.3%. Cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure and inflammatory markers all improved. Side effects were the familiar GLP-1 set, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, and about one in ten people at the top dose stopped because of them, which is somewhat higher than injectables.

What it will probably cost in India
Nobody outside Lilly knows. Two reference points. In the US, cash prices at launch were $149 to $349 a month depending on dose, well under the injectables. In India, Lilly priced Mounjaro at ₹3,281 to ₹6,445 per weekly dose, and a small-molecule tablet is far cheaper to make than a peptide pen. Our expectation, and it is only that, is a launch price somewhere between generic semaglutide and branded Wegovy, roughly ₹4,000 to ₹9,000 a month, with the usual Indian pattern of a price cut once volume builds. If Lilly repeats its Cipla co-marketing arrangement, distribution will reach small cities quickly.
Who it will suit
- People who will not inject. Needle refusal is common in India and it keeps a lot of eligible people off treatment entirely. A 12% result you take is better than a 20% result you do not start.
- BMI 25 to 32. The lower average loss is enough to reach a healthy range from here.
- Maintenance after an injectable. Losing the weight on tirzepatide and holding it on a tablet is a plausible long-term pattern, and cheaper.
- Travel-heavy lives. No cold chain, no pens through airport security.
Who should not wait for it
If your BMI is 35 or above, or you have type 2 diabetes with a high HbA1c, or you have fatty liver or PCOS driven by insulin resistance, the injectables are simply stronger and they are here now. Waiting a year for a tablet that produces 12% when 20% is available this week is a bad trade, especially since generic semaglutide has made the injectable route affordable. About the "Foundayo" listings on Indian trade sites
Several B2B marketplaces already list Foundayo at Indian rupee prices. As of September 2026 the product has no DCGI approval, so these are unlicensed imports at best. A GLP-1 of unknown origin is a real safety risk. Wait for the licensed launch.
